reminded

Orpheus

it
is
now
2016
began
painting in 1994
inspired by the works
and the life of Vincent van Gogh
it is as though he looked directly into the sun
while the rest had turned their backs fearful (full of fear)
of losing their sight when truth was that
fear had already struck them blind
dictating to them where they
could and where
they could not
cast their
gaze

to look steadily intently with fixed attention

i
am
not
speaking
of
navel
gazing
of
which
there
seems
to
be
an
excess
of
it
is
a
twenty
first
century
malady

the gaze of one such as Vincent van Gogh requires

a willingness to risk the possibility of blindness for sight

approximately
two weeks
to the
T

E
and
what
does
this
mean
it
means
hundreds
of
artists
showing
their
work
to
thousands
of art lovers
out
of
doors
of course it is all more or less dependent on the mercies of mother nature
and
those
with
their
fingers
on
the
red
buttons
try to imagine
what this world
would look like if
only one per cent of
the resources/money spent
by the military industrial complexes
were allocated to the arts and the artists

                               PROMETHEUS
                               53" x 41"
                               paint, pencil on plywood

some
words
regarding
PROMETHEUS
the
Titan
meaning
forethought
Prometheus has siblings one of which is his brother Epimetheus
meaning
hindsight
or
after thinker
it has be postulated
that we currently live in
an overwhelmingly Promethean age
our tendency has been to be ever looking foreword
ignoring
or
forgetting
the importance of hindsight
for
it
is
both
brothers
who
acted
as
representatives
of
mankind
both
are
required

the painting PROMETHEUS is painted
on an old shipping crate built specifically for shipping paintings
therefore the very foundation of the painting is that of going somewhere into a future space

in
order
to
restore
some
balance
and
to
honour
the
intent
and
the
spirit
of
the
myth
of
these
Titan
brothers
i
made
a
painting
honouring
EPIMETHEUS
which is on a canvas that has been reworked again and again to create a sense of the past

Hermes
one of 12 olympian gods
the
god
of
trade, thieves, eloquence, athletes, boundaries, literature, invention, and guide to the underworld
he
was
the trickster of the gods
he
would
outwit
the
gods
either
for
the
benefit
of
humankind
or
for his own personal amusement and satisfaction

the
painting
HE RME   S
is the sixth in the Parnassus Paintings series
